WIC in Fort Worth: Healthy Food and Support for Moms and Kids Under 5

Fort Worth Benefits guide — facts checked against Texas WIC, October 2026.

Feeding a baby or a toddler on a tight budget means doing math in the grocery aisle that nobody should have to do. WIC — the Women, Infants, and Children program — takes some of that math off your plate: healthy food, nutrition classes, breastfeeding support, and one-on-one counseling, all free, at five clinics across Fort Worth.

What WIC gives you

WIC is a Texas Health and Human Services program for pregnant women, new and breastfeeding mothers, and children younger than 5. If you qualify, you get:

  • Healthy food loaded onto a WIC EBT card each month — the specific foods WIC covers are chosen to fill the nutrition gaps for moms and little kids.
  • Nutrition classes and one-on-one counseling with nutritionists and registered dietitians.
  • Breastfeeding support — lactation consultants and peer counselors, at no cost.
  • Your benefits in the myWIC app, so you can track what’s on your card from your phone.

This is not a loan or a one-time handout — families stay on WIC as long as they qualify and their children are under 5, re-certifying along the way.

Who may qualify

You may qualify for WIC if:

  • You’re pregnant, postpartum, or breastfeeding, or you have a child younger than 5.
  • Your household income fits WIC’s guidelines — and here’s the shortcut: families already on Medicaid, SNAP, or TANF automatically meet WIC’s income guidelines. If you have any one of those three, the income question is already answered.
  • There is no citizenship requirement. WIC is open regardless of immigration status — this surprises a lot of families, and it keeps a lot of eligible moms from applying. Don’t let it stop you.

How to apply — step by step

  1. Apply online at texaswic.org/apply — the fastest start. You can also call a Fort Worth clinic at 817-321-5400, or Texas WIC statewide at 800-942-3678.
  2. Book your appointment at the clinic you chose.
  3. Bring your documents: ID, proof of address, proof of income, and your child’s immunization record. If you’re on Medicaid, SNAP, or TANF, bring that proof too — it answers the income question on the spot.
  4. Go to the appointment. Staff review your documents, check eligibility, and weigh, measure, and check iron status for you and your child.
  5. Get your card. Benefits load onto your WIC EBT card, trackable in the myWIC app.

Common questions

I’m pregnant with my first baby. Can I start now? Yes — pregnancy is exactly when WIC is meant to start. You don’t have to wait for the baby.

I work. Is WIC still for me? It can be. WIC’s income guidelines reach many working families, and if anyone in the household is on Medicaid, SNAP, or TANF, the income test is already met. The only sure way to know is to apply.

Does WIC replace SNAP? No — they’re different programs and families commonly have both. WIC covers specific healthy foods for moms and little kids; SNAP is broader grocery money. If you don’t have SNAP yet, our SNAP guide walks through it — and the Tarrant Area Food Bank can help you apply free at 1-866-430-6143.

What if my child just turned 5? WIC ends at age 5, but that’s also when school meals and other family programs come into view — run the checker and it will show what fits your family next, including child care scholarships.

Your next step: See what you qualify for — tell it you’re pregnant or have a child under 5 and WIC comes up with everything else that fits. Or get a personal family guide free with Apply for Me.
